The Roots of Music is a free, year round, music education program for middle-school students in New Orleans.
It was created by Rebirth Brass Band member, Derrick Tabb, to fill the music programming void in New Orleans’ educational institutions after Hurricane Katrina forced many schools to cut programming.
Today The Roots of Music program serves almost 100 students, making up a full marching band that is successfully parading the city since Mardi Gras 2009.
The program provides music education in history, theory, instrumental instruction and ensemble performance. Academic tutoring is also offered to ensure the students maintain at least a 2.5 GPA in school. The Emeril Lagasse Foundation is proud to support our future musicians.
