Culinary Careers Are Helping Young People Thrive

One truth lies at the center of every culinary space. Kitchens are a catalyst for creation and discovery.

In Michelin-starred restaurants, the world’s top chefs continue to perfect their techniques. In mom-and-pop diners, servers navigate complex customer interactions and put their math skills to the test. And in school teaching kitchens, students are discovering critical life skills and even more about themselves as they dig into each lesson.

Culinary spaces teach valuable lessons, which is why providing young people with access to the industry benefits us all. In communities working to expand opportunity, culinary environments offer a clear and proven model for impact.

A Clear Path to Opportunity

The food service industry offers young people a clear and accessible pathway into the workforce. According to the National Restaurant Association, “The industry’s workforce, now 15.3 million, is likely to exceed 17 million by 2030.”

Entry points are wide-ranging and widely available, too, from prep and line cooks to catering roles and entrepreneurship opportunities. Food service is one of today’s most accessible career pipelines, creating both entry-level and long-term employment for individuals willing to learn.

And as organizations and partners like ours continue to advance culinary education, young people can continue to enter the workforce with the skills, confidence, and support needed to succeed.

Empowering the Next Generation

We believe confidence grows from the ground up. Since 2002, Emeril Lagasse Foundation has invested more than $24 million in programs that create opportunities for youth to learn, grow, and thrive.

Working alongside donors, partners, and schools has shown us how intentionally investing in youth culinary education can elevate whole communities.

The impact can be seen in places like Reconcile New Orleans (Café Reconcile), a longtime Community Grants Program beneficiary that equips young adults with workforce skills, life skills, and ongoing support as they navigate education, employment, and adulthood. For more than two decades, our support has helped Café Reconcile expand training opportunities, strengthen its facilities, and deepen the services available to participants long after they complete the program.

Café Reconcile is one of many success stories that reflect what’s possible when young people are given an early introduction to how a kitchen operates and how individual contributions shape a larger goal.

And once lessons take root, individuals often discover even more about themselves. Culinary education is at its strongest when it fosters confidence, purpose, and personal growth alongside the “hard skills.”

Growth Beyond the Kitchen

The impact of culinary education extends well beyond career preparation. Kitchens and gardens teach us how to work alongside others, take ownership of responsibilities, and contribute to something larger than ourselves.

By experimenting with flavors, sharing family recipes, or dining with others, culinary spaces also give young people the opportunity to express themselves and take pride in what they’ve created.

For youth working toward independence, a sense of pride can be the beginning of something lasting.
